Root Canal Treatment:

Root Canal At A Glance:

For many years teeth that had an infected or diseased nerve had to be extracted. Now we can often save these teeth with root canal treatment. At Dr. Mocrae's office we believe in saving teeth instead of removing them so that you have a happier, healthier, natural smile.

What Is A Root Canal?
A root canal is needed when the nerve of your tooth becomes irritated and infected, bacteria grows inside of the tooth causing pressure, pain, and sometimes swelling.

What Makes Root Canal Treatment Necessary:
Trauma: Physical blow to tooth or constant striking of tooth such as excessive clenching and grinding of the teeth.
Physical Irritation: Deep decay or large filling.
Severe Gum Disease: Due to periodontal absess (gum disease).

Procedure (2 Appointments):
At the first appointment for root canal, the tooth/area is numbed with anesthetic. A cover is placed over your mouth with an opening to expose the tooth and help to isolate the area. An opening is made through the crown of the tooth. The inside of the tooth is cleaned. At the end of the first appointment, medication is placed inside of the tooth and sealed with a temporary filling.
At the second appointment, the temporary medication is removed from the tooth. The tooth is then filled down the roots. It is recommended that a post be placed at this time for strength. The tooth is then permanently filled.

After Treatment:
Teeth that have had root canal treatment are very weak and can easily fracture. It is recommended that a crown be placed on a tooth with a root canal.
