Healthy Smiles Ontario Program

We accept Healthy Smiles Ontario

Many dental offices limit the types of coverage they accept, leaving families struggling to find care.
At Dr. Steve Mocrae Dentistry, we continue to welcome patients who need urgent dental treatment under Healthy Smiles Ontario — with no extra fees or co-pay.

For regular checkups and cleanings, families can now receive coverage through the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), available to all Canadians who file taxes.

Below you will find some general information on the Healthy Smiles Ontario program, how you can apply, and what we can do to help. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact us.

What is Healthy Smiles Ontario?

The Healthy Smiles Ontario program is designed to provide eligible children and youth aged 17 and under with free dental care.
The program is designed for children with or without dental insurance. Even if you have insurance for your children, the program may cover any remaining balance not covered by insurance.
Previously, children’s ODSP and the CINOT program provided coverage, but those have since been converted to the Healthy Smiles Ontario program.

As of 2025, Healthy Smiles Ontario covers emergency dental care at our office. For routine services like checkups and cleanings, families are now encouraged to enroll in the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) — available to all Canadians who file taxes.

How to apply for Health Smile Ontario

Parents and guardians can fill out a Healthy Smiles Ontario application form, which we can supply in-office or which can be accessed online.
There are two versions of the form: a general application form for routine care, and an Emergency and Essential Services stream form for urgent or emergency dental needs.
Both forms are simple to complete, and approval typically happens quickly. The emergency form is generally valid for one year, while the general application remains valid until your child’s 18th birthday.
As the application states, if paying for dentistry or a portion of dentistry for a child would financially distress your family, you may be eligible for coverage.

Healthy Smiles Ontario patients are treated no different

In our office, every patient receives the same level of care and attention, regardless of their type of dental coverage.
The difference lies only in what each program covers — not in how we treat our patients.

As of 2025, our policy has changed to reflect updated government programs:

  • We continue to accept Healthy Smiles Ontario for emergency dental care such as pain, infection, or urgent treatment.

  • For routine care (checkups, cleanings, and ongoing maintenance), patients are now covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), which is available to all Canadians who file taxes.

What is covered under Healthy Smiles Ontario (for emergency care):

  • Tooth extractions

  • Urgent fillings

  • Emergency pain relief or infection treatment

  • Limited root canals (when required for pain or infection)

If you have a child who is 17 or under and paying for dental treatment (or even a portion of it) would financially distress your family, this program can help.
For questions or to learn more about enrolling in the CDCP for regular care, feel free to call our office and speak with us.
