Dental Coverage FAQs

Frequently asked questions about general dental coverage

Does Dr. Steve Mocrae accept dental payment directly from insurance companies?
Yes, we accept insurance payments directly. Most insurance companies allow this. Having your dental fees paid directly to the dentist allows you to keep your own personal finances for other expenses like grocery bills, mortgage payments, or vacation plans.

Do all insurance companies pay 100% of dental fees?
Although some insurance companies do cover 100% of all dental care, most insurance companies have plan limits. The limit can be in the form of percentage of fee covered, deductible, maximum allowance per year, fee guide limitations, or only covering select services. Simply contact our office and speak with our front desk staff. We will help you determine your insurance coverage for any dental treatment you have in mind.

How does the yearly maximum work on my dental insurance?
Most insurance companies have a yearly maximum allowance. This is the maximum amount that the insurance company will pay in a given calendar year for dental treatment. Common maximum values typically range between one to two thousand dollars but can be as low as five hundred dollars for students. The yearly maximum usually starts at the beginning of the calendar year, January 1st, but can vary. Some maximums start the date you received your insurance for your employment. Contact our office and speak with our reception staff who will be happy to help you determine your insurance coverage by contacting your insurance provider.

Frequently asked questions about the Healthy Smiles program

Does Dr. Steve Mocrae accept the Healthy Smiles program as dental coverage?

Yes, we continue to accept the Healthy Smiles program for emergency care. If your child is in pain or needs urgent treatment, we will see them under Healthy Smiles with no extra fees or co-pay.
For routine care such as checkups and cleanings, we now require enrollment in the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). All Canadians who file taxes are eligible to apply.

What services are covered under the Healthy Smiles program for my child?
The Healthy Smiles program usually covers the costs for the following treatments: checkup and x-rays, all dental fillings, basic teeth cleaning, root canals, and tooth extractions. Even if you have dental coverage, the program will help cover any balance remaining after the insurance payment.

Is my child treatment covered by Healthy Smiles?
Please see our Healthy Smiles page for more information.

If my child has Healthy Smiles coverage, does Dr. Steve Mocrae use different materials or procedures for them as opposed to patients with regular or no insurance?
No, at our clinic all services are conducted using the same materials and procedures. This is without exception, regardless of the type of insurance coverage or if the patient has no insurance at all.

Do I have to fill out the insurance form and send it in myself?
No, at our clinic we do most of the paperwork for you.

Are Healthy Smiles patient appointments booked differently?
No, Dr. Steve Mocrae books patients weekly Wednesday through Saturday. Appointments are booked the same regardless of the type of insurance or if you have no insurance at all.

How is Dr. Steve Mocrae with children?
Dr. Mocrae himself has nine children and has been catering to children’s needs in the office for three decades. He takes great care and pride in making sure children feel comfortable in and out of the dental chair.

Frequently asked questions about the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP):

Does Dr. Steve Mocrae accept the ODSP program as dental coverage?
We now accept ODSP for emergency dental care only. If you are in pain or have an urgent dental problem, we will treat you under ODSP with no co-pay or extra fees.
For routine care such as checkups, cleanings, and ongoing dental maintenance, patients must be enrolled in the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). All Canadians who have filed their taxes are eligible, and CDCP will cover all routine dental services.

What services are covered for myself and my children?
Under ODSP, emergency treatments such as pain relief, tooth extractions, and urgent fillings are fully covered.
For non-emergency procedures (like checkups, cleanings, or ongoing dental care), coverage is now provided through the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP).
For dentures, we continue to send an estimate to the health unit, which may approve and cover a portion of the cost depending on individual needs.

If I’m an ODSP patient, does Dr. Steve Mocrae use different materials or procedures for me as opposed to patients with regular or no Insurance?
No, at our office we use the same materials and procedures regardless of whether the patient has a certain type of dental coverage or none at all.

Do I have to fill out the Insurance form and send it in myself?
No, we will do most of the paperwork for you in our office.

Are ODSP patient appointments booked differently for Dr. Steve Mocrae’s services?
No, we book patients weekly Wednesday through Saturday. Appointments are booked the same regardless of the type of dental coverage.

Note: As of 2025, routine dental care for patients under ODSP, OW, or HSO is covered through the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Our office continues to see all patients for emergency treatment under their existing programs at no extra cost.
