How to Choose a Family Dentist

February 18, 2015 By Dr. Steve Mocrae & Associates

It’s not always easy to choose the right dentist. With so many specialists available, how do you know which one is the best fit for your family? Well, to answer this question, a few considerations will need to be made. It’s not to say that any one dental practice is better than the other, though like anything, those who have more years of experience and top-notch X-ray and cleaning equipment are usually the better suited choice, but rather to take into account your personal needs and find a corresponding match.

Finding the right dentist

Families who are solely focused on general, routine dental cleanings have a plethora of choices, whereas patients who suffer from prolonged oral health conditions should typically seek out a specialist. Availability is also an important factor that many people fail to take note of. Not all dentists are as flexible as others. Generally speaking, those with fewer patients will be able to schedule appointments within the recommended two week time frame when problems arise.

If the clinic in question has extremely short working hours or has a small staff in a highly populated area, you may want to find a better alternative. Families with young children and teenagers need a family practitioner who’s open to seeing patients on an as-needed basis. Regardless of how busy the dentist may be, they should never go beyond the six-month mark for routine cleanings and check-ups.

Does your dentist have experience in family dentistry?

Opting for a dentist that has pediatric experience is a better choice for those who have children. Additional training is required to provide adequate care to minors, since dental needs develop and change over time. As well, clinics that cater to younger patients tend to decorate their offices in a more kid-friendly way. A lot of children fear going to the dentist, so taking them to calm and relaxing environment can help ease any anxiety or tension they may already have.

The goal is to promote a sense of comfort, not fear. You want your kids to recognize the importance of visiting the dentist on a regular basis, since they will take this habit with them as they get older. Last but certainly not least, the staff should be friendly, welcoming, and have great communication skills. These skills are just as important as credentials, and have a much longer lasting impact on the patient experience.
