Tips to Save on Your Dental Care

January 28, 2015 By Dr. Steve Mocrae & Associates

Even if you have dental coverage, your insurance plan may only cover up to a certain amount per year. If you require major dental procedures, you may have to make up the difference out-of-pocket. Before you ignore your oral health in an attempt to save money, here are tips to help you save on dental care.

Floss and brush at least twice a day, every day. When you commit to preventive care, like proper brushing and flossing daily, you’ll save money in the long run. You’ll experience less cavities and will need to make fewer emergency trips to the dentist. In addition to spending ample time cleaning your teeth, a healthy diet will also help you save money on oral care. Getting proper calcium, protein and vitamins will keep your mouth healthy for years to come.

If you’re a student, take advantage

Most Canadian colleges and universities offer comprehensive dental plans for active students. Ask your school council what your student insurance covers and take advantage while you’re still enrolled! You may be covered for cleanings or cavities while you’re in school. Time your procedures wisely. When it comes to elective procedures that require multiple steps, find out if your dentist will allow you to space out each part over the course of several months.

By doing so, you may not have to pay for the entire procedure up front and can pay or save as you go. Unless the procedure is timely and needs to be done in consecutive visits, your dentist should have no problem giving you some space. Remember, when it comes to teeth, you want to keep them for a lifetime, so proper care is necessary to do so.
