Orthodontics For Children

Orthodontics for children

Starting orthodontics early is the best prevention

The best approach to correcting crooked teeth is to start early with children’s orthodontics. If your children are experiencing problems such as poor teeth alignment, cross bite, or overbite, it’s a good idea to have them come in and see Dr. Mocrae as soon as possible. We will be able to evaluate and recognize problems related to the development of the teeth and jaw, as well as prevent your child from experiencing more serious issues in the future. This saves you the cost of expensive procedures that are required with advanced alignment issues.

When is the right time for orthodontics?

Experts recommend that children be evaluated for orthodontics by seven years of age. For those who require further treatment, the majority receive it sometime between ages nine and fourteen. In addition to preventing future issues, early orthodontic evaluation and treatment allows for the optimal development of their permanent teeth. If the teeth grow incorrectly, they can create problems in maintaining and cleaning them. Poor cleaning over time can lead to periodontal disease, decay, and even the loss of teeth.

Habits such as sucking the thumb or tongue-pushing adversely affect the positioning of the teeth in children. These should also be observed and addressed appropriately.

Thinking beyond the smile

Many parents don’t realize that the benefits of orthodontics for children go beyond just straightening the teeth for an attractive smile. Orthodontics protect the surfaces of the teeth and improve the chewing function of the jaw. The alignment of the teeth also is critical to the general health of your child. Many adults who experience temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues can often trace their pain to a history of poor dental alignment.

TMJ issues can contribute to headaches and chronic neck pain. For children, this can have an adverse affect on their ability to concentrate and learn. Other common issues related to orthodontic health include:

  • Bone damage
  • Chewing difficulties
  • Speech impairments
  • Injury to teeth

Orthodontics for children provides the end result of a beautiful smile! Dental issues can be a source of distress for many children. Early treatment will enhance their self image and build confidence around others. Children’s orthodontics have also become a far more pleasant experience for many children. Although braces are still used to treat more significant alignment issues, there are a large number of alternatives that are now available. These can help correct the teeth without the use of metal braces and wires. If your child needs minimal corrections, custom-fitted removable trays can be used to correct the teeth over time.

By addressing concerns early, you’ll be able recognize many common signs that indicate the need for more advanced orthodontic care. Correcting your child’s teeth with orthodontics ensures the proper development and growth of the teeth and jaw. You’ll be starting your child off on the right foot for long term health and will be giving them the gift of a beautiful smile!
